Testplanung Neu-Oerlikon, Zurich, 2016, Planning

Differentiated high-rises and open spaces

The test planning was carried out under the direction of a team of experts with the landowners, the Department of Urban Design, the Civil Engineering Department of Zurich and Grün Stadt Zürich with three teams of planners. Our proposal was chosen as the basis for new special building regulations.

Together with the Franklin Tower planned by the SBB, the proposed high-rise buildings for ABB and AXA on Max-Frisch-Platz form a group of tower blocks that is linked across the railway tracks. Row buildings with apartments to the side of Therese-Giese-Strasse create easily accessible and well-proportioned internal courtyards. In the convincing traffic concept public transportation is placed on the main axis, private traffic in cul-de-sacs and there is a good network of routes for pedestrians and bikes at right angles to the tracks. The mix of existing and new buildings produces specific outdoor spaces and ensures the preservation of the industrial identity.
