Wohn- und Gewerbehaus Schlotterbeck, Zurich, 2012, Competition 1st Prize
From the garage to the social hub
The height of former workshop building of the listed Citroen garage is increased to 40 metres by a tower at the ramp, by 25 metres at the southwestern end and by adding a storey between these two points. Stepping the building volume helps to articulate the large mass and meaningful local references are made to A.H. Steiner’s high-rises and park buildings in Heiligenfeldpark.
The apartments in the workshop building are laid out in such a way that the existing mushroom-head columns become freestanding sculptures in space. The apartments in the tower are free from columns and are carried by walls that project radially from the circulation core, staggered in position from floor to floor. A diverse range of apartments that includes garden lofts, maisonettes, patio, park and panorama apartments, together with flexibly rentable commercial spaces, ensures an attractive and social mix.
The new materials in the interior strive to achieve the permanence of the industrial. The colours used for the coachwork of the 1955 Citroën DS provided a model for the colour scheme of the kitchen units, bathroom, apartment doors and letter boxes and convey the flair of the «Nouvelle Vague».
